Hotel Linen Yarn Count Guide
How yarn count, thread count, weave and finishing work together in hotel bedding specifications.
Yarn count describes the fineness of yarn, but it does not tell you how a finished hotel sheet will perform on its own. Procurement teams should evaluate yarn count together with fiber composition, thread count, weave, fabric weight, finishing and laundering conditions.
What common count systems mean
Cotton yarn is often described with values such as 40s, 60s or 80s. In this system, a higher number generally indicates a finer yarn. Finer yarns can produce a smoother and lighter hand, but construction quality and fiber quality remain critical.
Why thread count is not a standalone grade
Thread count usually describes the number of warp and weft threads in a defined area. Very high figures can be created with multi-ply yarns or counting methods that do not translate into better hotel performance. Ask how the number was calculated and request a physical sample.
Match the specification to the property
- Economy and high-turnover operations often prioritize laundering resilience and replacement cost.
- Midscale and upscale hotels may balance smoothness, presentation and operational durability.
- Luxury properties may specify finer yarns and more refined finishing, subject to the laundry process.
The right specification is the one that survives the property’s real wash chemistry, temperatures, finishing equipment and change frequency. Test production samples in the intended laundry system before approving a large order.
