Hotel Towel GSM and Size Guide
How towel weight, dimensions, yarn, pile and laundry conditions affect guest feel and operations.
GSM means grams per square meter and is a useful way to compare towel weight. It should be read with size, yarn, pile construction, absorbency, drying time and laundering performance.
What higher GSM changes
More weight can create a denser, fuller hand, but it can also increase wash loads, drying energy and storage volume. A lower GSM towel can still perform well when yarn and construction are appropriate.
Specify finished dimensions
State whether dimensions are before or after laundering and define acceptable tolerance. Typical sets may include washcloths, hand towels, bath towels, bath sheets, bath mats and pool towels, but market conventions vary.
Test the complete operating cycle
Wash samples several times using the property’s chemistry and equipment. Measure shrinkage and weight, then assess absorbency, lint, edge distortion, pile recovery and drying time.
Keep identification practical
Use labels, woven identifiers or controlled color details where housekeeping must separate room, spa, gym and pool stock. Any decorative border should be checked for shrinkage behavior against the towel body.
